Now you might be wondering, what the heck is it the Big D public speaking tip? I’m going to tell you about that in a moment.
First, I have a question to ask you. Do you love to help others? I bet you said “Yes!” I am pretty sure you’re nodding your head. The reason that you became a speaker is that you want to make a difference in people’s lives. You’re probably driven by that. Having an impact is super important to you and that’s an wonderful attribute. That’s the same attribute that I have that can also be a challenge. When we love to help other people, we often end up putting too much content in our talks because we’re afraid if we don’t give the audience whole enchilada or at least 75% of our information, the audience will think that we didn’t give them enough.
This public speaking tip is about the balancing act between how much value do we give, and how much content do we deliver, while monetarily valuing our expertise.
How to Avoid the Big Data Dump
The Big D stands for the Data Dump. This first of our five public speaking tips are Avoid the Data Dump!
When we deliver too much information in our talk, we end up overwhelming the audience. What happens is the audience is taking in all this information. They might be writing all our points down. They could be taking notes and nodding their head. However, when you’re done, the audience feels like their head is spinning. It’s too much information. Imagine if you were in a presentation and somebody overwhelmed you with too much content. How would you feel?
This public speaking tip is important because if you were in the audience, you might get up and go to the bathroom. You might start texting. You might start talking to your neighbor. You might check out mentally, emotionally, physically, and then what happens in those situations is the audience does nothing with the information.
When You Try to Sell a Product or Service and Offer Too Much Information
The audience might have pages of notes. Sadly, they won’t don’t do anything with it afterward. And if you offered a program, product, service or coaching, the audience ends up not purchasing it because they felt like there was too much information that they couldn’t actually implement it. Also they might think that they have this long to do list that they have to complete before they can hire you. And I’m speaking from experience because I would deliver these full day workshops. However, only a few people move forward. Having only a few new coaching clients wasn’t going to work for me financially because I couldn’t have a stable business if only a few people from my live events, we’re moving forward working with me. So, it just didn’t make sense for me to continue this way. I had to figure out what was wrong. I was doing the data dump because my desire to give them so much information, However, it was overwhelming them.

You’ll be able to look at your content and decide what is necessary and what isn’t necessary for them to know at this time. So you’ll be able to take out the excess parts of your content by asking that simple question, and then you’ll find that you have content and the ability to deliver your presentation in a way that allows the audience to process of information and move forward with that information.
Public Speaking Tip #2: The Stand Out S
Let’s talk about the Stand Out S. The S in this public speaking tip stands for Standout Signature Story.
The standout word means that you are seen in a positive way different from other people, that you’re memorable, that you leave an impact, that the audience says something like “Oh wow, that person really changed my life.” That is a stand out part and the signature part of your story is something that you can do over and over again. You might have heard the term signature presentation. That means it is a presentation that you can utilize over and over again. You can deliver that talk at multiple types of events, on video, online, webinars, in magazine articles, in media and in your own books. And the same thing with the word signature applies to your story. It’s a story that you can tell over and over again in a variety of places and it’s part of your signature talk.
From Breakdown to Breakthrough
In this public speaking tip, you might be wondering what type of story am I talking about. I’m talking about the pain to gain story where you had a breakdown that led to a breakthrough, where you had to challenge that made you a champion for other people, that you had a tragedy and turn it into a triumph, that you had an adversity and use it to give the advantage to other people. That is pain to gain. We’ve all had those experiences. Every single one of us and many people say, “I don’t want to share my painful life experiences.” Keep in mind you’re not going to tell your whole life story. You are only telling one story that is important and connected to the talk that you are presenting.
Your Signature Story
With the Standout Signature Story, you want to leverage real life experiences. The audience wants to emotionally connect with you. That builds the know, like and trust factor. When it comes to the stories you want to remember that facts tell, stories sell. You can give your audience a whole bunch of facts and a whole bunch of data, however, the stories are the ones then people emotionally connect with.
What Motivates You?
In reading these public speaking tips, think about what motivates you. For example, imagine if you wanted to lower your cholesterol and your friend said “I just read this amazing book that helped me drop my cholesterol by 20% and my doctor is shocked.” If you had cholesterol issues, would you want the name of the book? You’re going to want to know what book that is because someone told you a story about their real life experience.
Your Audience Perspective
The other thing about the importance of sharing your personal pain to gain story, is that your audience will often put speakers on a pedestal. Very often the audience believes that nothing has ever happened to you (the speaker), that you’ve never had a bad life, even though that’s probably not the reality. We’ve all had pains in our life. Some may have had a difficult childhood, some may have lost a parent at a young age, and some may have lived in the projects. I’ve coached business owners that have walked away from a seven-figure career and six-figure careers to follow their dreams because they all had that pain moment. I am certain you have your pain to gain experiences too.

You want to make sure that they see you as the person that they can relate to, that you are on their level, except you’re the one that’s going to help them overcome whatever challenges that they’re experiencing. Once again, it’s building that know, like and trust factor.
The next part of this public speaking tip focuses on which story do you share. Like many of us, including myself, you have probably had a long list of pivotal life experiences, many of them challenging at different points in our life.
Your Pivotal Life Experiences
As a public speaker, we’re not here to tell the whole enchilada, our whole entire life story. You want to pick one significant moment, one significant direction, one significant pain area that you were able to turn it around. You don’t have time to tell the whole story. Decide which story you want to share, and make sure that story connects to your message. That’s key. It’s got to connect with why you are telling it. For example, I have different stories that I can share. I can share when I first got into speaking, I took a job with a nonprofit and they didn’t tell me I’d have to present and I had no experience whatsoever, and I was a horrible communicator. I’ve had an experience where other grammar school kids laughed at me two times when I stood on stage. I had my own mother laugh at me when I was a child when I would cry. These all connect to the transformation I have had had a speaker. It clearly shows an audience that if I could overcome my speaking challenges they can too.
Pick ONE Pivotal Experience
When I am presenting, I’m not telling all three stories or a long list of other life experiences. I have to pick one story, one experience that impacted me, and then make sure that story obviously connects the dots as to why I made in front of that audience that day. When implementing this public speaking tip, remember, you need to do the same thing. It’s got to connect.
Decide on the story that makes the best connection with the message that you’re sharing at the moment. And you can tell another story another time.
Public Speaking Tip #3: The Monetizing M
The Monetizing M stands for Money.
When reading this public speaking tip you might be wondering, what does money have to do with my presentation? Well, it might be that you have a call to action and you would like people to invest in your services. Maybe you want people to feel inspired to take the action steps that you want them to take. Maybe you gave them a list of five things that they need to do. If you want them to do it, you want to include money. Get Them Invested In You
When you do what I am about to share with you, your audience will invest more in the ideas that you share. They’ll invest more in the programs or products or services. They will be more likely to hire you and book you as a speaker when you can show them the money.
When you’re asking people to invest in your services, you need to show the audience how you will help them save money and/or make money. As a result, they’re more likely to take out their credit card on the spot.

How to Include the Money Conversation
Think about a health and wellness practitioner. How does a health coach and wellness practitioner help their clients make money or save money? For example, if a health and wellness coach or consultant helps somebody decrease their body fat by 30% that person will obviously have more energy. And will that person make more money? Yes. Their client might create more sales, or they might get a raise. And a health coach can help them save money too by helping their client get rid of prescription drugs that are costly and doctor visits that can add up quickly. So, they’re helping that individual save money as well.
When I was implementing these public speaking tips, I had to look at my own business from the same perspective. How do I help people make money or save money? If an individual can go out and close more sales and/or create more leads when they’re presenting, they’re obviously going to make more money. Plus, they can be seen as a highly desired speaker and get booked over and over again. They’re going to make more money because their content is going to be so strong and their delivery is going to be so powerful. How am I helping people save money? They don’t have to go out and make those same mistakes over and over again. And that way they avoid the costly mistakes that are, are super common that so many people make. I’m helping them save money by sharing expert steps they need to take.
Remember, you want to help people save money and/or make money and include that in your presentation. And you will find that people will be clamoring for what you have to offer.
