Studies show that the average person uses 10% or less of the actual potential capacity for memory. There is an incredible amount of untapped potential inside of you which you can improve by starting to apply these 3 memory strategies today.
Memory Strategy #1: The Right Focus
The quality of your concentration is way more important than the actual length of time spent rehearsing and trying to memorize your speech. You want to focus on short time frames where you are truly focused rather than long and exhausting practice sessions. If I find that a practice presentation isn’t going the way I would like, I walk away from it and come back when I am ready to deliver it in the way that I know I can.
Memory Strategy # 2 – Visualize It
Visualize what you want to remember. During presentations, I love to share personal and client stories as they relate to the subject matter. When I am practicing I visualize the stories as I am talking about them. When I am ready to share the story with an audience, I am literally walking them through the images that I am seeing in my mind’s eye. It works great!
Another way to visualize is to chunk down your content and put it in to bullet points. Your next step is to practice it with the bullet points only until you can easily remember the content. Then immediately before the presentation, refresh your memory by looking over your presentation bullet points. You will find that during the actual presentation, your mind can easily recall the bullet points much more effectively than it can long wordy text.
Memory Strategy # 3: Repeat It
If you practice your presentations often enough, you will be able to remember it. One or two times just isn’t going to cut it. Start practicing several days prior to give yourself the opportunity to work out any presentation kinks, you are also giving your memory ample time to recall the information when you need it most.
“Muscle memory” is extremely powerful. That’s why you can easily ride a bike, even if you haven’t been on one for 20 years. The same is true for speaking.
Now that you have these 3 very important presentation memory techniques that really work, utilize them! They work great for me and if you follow my steps they will work great for you too!
