Want to get booked more? Revamp your Speaker Demo Reel today!

Without a stellar demo reel, getting noticed as a Speaker can be a major challenge, and here’s why revamping yours is crucial to ensure you stand out and secure more speaking opportunities.

I recently posted a “Call for Speakers” for my upcoming event on social media. We had hundreds of speakers interested in applying to speak at the ShePowered Speaking 2025 live event.

But many got stuck applying because they didn’t have a “Speaker Demo Reel,” aka “Sizzle Reel.”

But, I did see several videos that were less than ideal when we began reviewing the applications.

If you have a Speaker Demo Reel and this sounds familiar, it might be time for a serious upgrade:

  1. Only including a TEDx talk (which often doesn’t carry the credibility speakers think it does.) Experienced event hosts want to book speakers with more experience than a TEDx talk.
  2. Footage of the speaker presenting to a mostly empty room with a few family and friends in the back room seats.
  3. Reading notes while speaking comes across as unprepared and unengaging.

These mistakes can make the speaker seem less professional and will cost the speaker opportunities to get booked.

ARE YOU READY FOR AN UPGRADE:

Here’s how to create a Speaker Demo Reel that wows event organizers and gets you booked to speak:

  1. Short Video Clips: Highlight your best moments on stage, but also include audience reactions—like laughter, applause, or nods of agreement. Let them see the connection you create.
  2. Event Host Testimonials: Add short video snippets of hosts saying things like, “She totally delivered!” or overlay text on the screen with these glowing reviews.
  3. Audience Testimonials: Capture the buzz with audience members saying things like, “We want [Your Name] back again!” Keep these clips short and impactful.
  4. Media Logos and Highlights: Include an “As Seen In” section with media outlets where you’ve been featured or events where you’ve spoken. Bonus points if you add a quick clip from a media interview.
  5. Music: Add background music for the moments when no one is speaking.
  6. Keep It Short: Your reel should be under 3 minutes. Make every second count.

And, of course, keep it on brand. The colors, fonts, and tone should align with your overall speaker identity.

Here’s the reality:

A strong demo reel can make all the difference in getting booked. Don’t let yours hold you back.

What’s one element you could add to your current reel to make it more engaging?
